Reward charts for toddlers: making one that actually works
For 3-5 year olds, a sticker chart is one of the simplest ways to encourage a new habit. The trick is keeping it small, visual and consistent - here's how.
Pick one goal at a time
Little ones do best with a single, clear target - potty training, sleeping in their own bed, or getting dressed on their own. One goal per chart keeps it easy to understand and easy to celebrate.
Keep the steps short
Five to ten stickers is plenty for this age. A reward that feels too far away loses its magic. If your child is younger, start with fewer steps and a quicker reward, then build up.
Reward effort, stay consistent
- Praise the try, not just the win. Effort is what you want to grow.
- Put it at their eye level. The fridge or bedroom door beats a drawer.
- Follow through on the reward. It doesn't need to cost anything - time together works best.
